Business for a Better San Clemente Political Action Committee
The San Clemente Chamber of Commerce’s Business for a Better San Clemente Political Action Committee (BBSC- PAC) is a committee of the San Clemente Chamber of Commerce, composed of Chamber members appointed by the Chairman of the Board. The BBSC-PAC is not affiliated with any political party.
The primary purpose of the BBSC-PAC is to recommend actions to the San Clemente Board of Directors advocating for the local political interests of the San Clemente business community, particularly the election of San Clemente City Council members. The Chamber welcomes any interested Chamber member in good standing to contact the Chairman regarding participation in the BBSC-PAC Committee.
In October of 2020, The San Clemente Chamber of Commerce was proud to produce two virtual Candidate Forums, providing the public with an opportunity to get to know the candidates for City Council. For these events, the BBSC-PAC partnered with the non-profit and non-partisan organization First Amendment Voice (FAV), whose goal is to promote civic engagement and an understanding of the First Amendment. FAV was a co-sponsor of the Candidate Forums but was not involved in the candidate endorsement process.
San Clemente City Council Candidate Endorsement Process
The candidate endorsement process was established to provide a service to the community through the Chamber’s evaluation of each candidate’s qualifications as they align with our current community’s needs, with a focus on the Chamber’s business members.
In the case of City Council elections, all candidates are eligible and invited to participate in the endorsement process, which includes the completion of a thoughtfully prepared questionnaire, interview with the BBSC-PAC committee, and participation in a Candidate Forum.
At times, the San Clemente Chamber of Commerce will support candidates, issues and/or propositions and legislative matters that may affect the San Clemente business community.
2020 Candidate Endorsements
During the 2020 interviews, candidates were asked about issues that affect both businesses and residents including questions related to: economic development, homelessness, City Council relations, the TCA, city-related lawsuits, etc. Many of the candidates were knowledgeable and mostly in agreement on a number of these matters.
This year, more qualified candidates aligned with Chamber of Commerce’s priorities than in any other election in recent memory. After hours of meetings and deliberations, the BBSC-PAC and the Board of Directors were in agreement that the following candidates were deserving of the Chamber’s endorsement:
Three candidates (shown below in alphabetical order) were endorsed for the one open 2-year Term Council seat.
- Tyler Boden - Local Business Owner
- Jim Dahl - Retired Fire Captain
- Steven Knoblock - Businessman/Hearing Officer
Three candidates (shown below in alphabetical order) were endorsed for the two open 4-year Term Council seats.
- Bill Hart - Software Sales Director
- Gene James - City of San Clemente Councilmember
- Charlie Smith - Corporate Banker
The San Clemente Chamber of Commerce thanks all participating candidates for their dedication to and interest in serving the San Clemente community.
